An 80-year-old man from North Fort Myers, Florida, was arrested for allegedly suffocating a woman amid their shared struggles with health and financial woes in an effort to end her suffering.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office stated that on Sunday afternoon, deputies responded to a residence on Kaidon Lane in the Herons Glen Golf and Country Club regarding a call for service from neighbors.

While en route, it was relayed to deputies that a male subject, later identified as Richard Scharf, had taken the life of a woman on the scene and was threatening to take his own.

During the investigation, detectives uncovered that the two were undergoing medical and financial hardships.

It was discovered that Scharf intended to put the victim out of her suffering and suffocate her while she was asleep, the report stated.

Officials reported that upon arrival, Scharf was found sitting in his car in the garage.

Once deputies detained Scharf, they entered the home and reported finding the female victim unresponsive.

Lifesaving measures were performed on the victim by both on-scene deputies and EMS — however, they were unsuccessful.

Scharf has been accused of second-degree murder and was transported to the Lee County Jail.
