Shirley M. Harrover, retired Centennial High School registrar and a church organist, died Oct. 31 at the University of Maryland Medical Center of complications from a fall she suffered at her Havre de Grace home. She was 87.

The daughter of Lewis J. Zucco, a Westinghouse Electric Corp. engineer, and Catherine E. Coles Zucco, a homemaker, Shirley May Zucco was born and raised in Irwin, Pa., where she graduated from North Huntingdon High School.

She was a graduate of the Robert Morris Business School and was working as a secretary at Westinghouse Electric Corp. in Pittsburgh when she met and fell in love with her future husband, Robert E. Harrover, a metallurgical engineer, whom she married in 1952.

They were transferred to Linthicum in 1964 and settled in Ellicott City in 1976. Her husband died in 2012.

Mrs. Harrover began working for Howard County public schools in 1978 as a secretary at Glenelg High School, and later became registrar at Centennial High School, retiring in 1992.

Since 2003, she had been a resident of Havre de Grace. She was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Bel Air, where she played the organ.

“Wherever she was a church member, she was the church organist,” said her daughter, Amy White of Churchville.

Mrs. Harrover’s philanthropic interests included various veterans’ organizations as well as Smile Train, which helps children who need lip and cleft palate surgery, and World Vision, which assists children living in poverty.

Mrs. Harrover was an Orioles and Ravens fan.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at her church, 2106 Churchville Road.

In addition to her daughter, she is survived by three brothers, Bill Zucco of Odenton, Jim Zucco of Irwin and Lew Zucco of Reno, Nev.; and two grandchildren.
