No. 10 Navy men top rival Army, 11-10, in Star Game
C. Rees scores winning goal 38 seconds into OT; Towson falls to Delaware
Casey Rees (Boys' Latin) used a fake flip to get his hands free and scored the game-winner 38 seconds into overtime to lead the No. 10 Navy men's lacrosse team to an 11-10 victory over archrival No. 20 Army West Point on Saturday.
The visiting Midshipmen (9-2, 7-1 Patriot League) have won seven games in a row for the first time since opening the 2007 season 8-0. The Black Knights fell to 8-4 and 5-2.
The win marked the Mids' second straight Star Game victory and assured Navy at least a share of the Patriot League regular-season title and the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament the week of April 25.
“It was a great battle,” Navy coach Rick Sowell said. “It felt like we were playing uphill for most of the game. I think we played more defense today than we have in the last two games combined. But a lot of credit goes to our guys for hanging in there and stepping up.”
The teams traded goals over the opening quarter before Navy went on a 3-0 run and opened its biggest lead of the game at 4-2 with 9:39 remaining in the opening half.
Delaware, led by Paul Major with four goals, opened with a 3-0 run and never trailed. Ryan Drenner (Westminster) scored twice for Towson.
Vermont led 10-5 lead at halftime.
Evan Gormley scored twice for Mount St. Mary's.
“I thought the team played well today,” Maryland coach Cathy Reese said. “Ohio State is a really good team, and I thought both the offense and defense came out and did some really nice things. It was great to honor the seniors before the game and get the win for them.”
Clark finished with four goals. Lehigh rallied with a 5-0 run over the final 11:38 of regulation to force overtime. Julianne D'Orazio scored the tying goal with 33 seconds left for the Mountain Hawks.
Binghamton went on a 2-0 run over the final nine minutes of regulation to force overtime. Nolan and Carolyn Jamison (Westminster) each finished with a hat trick for UMBC.
Morgan Young (Towson) and Jenna Collins (River Hill) each had three goals.
