Hockey Canada case declared mistrial
A judge declared a mistrial Friday in the sexual assault case involving five former members of Canada’s world junior hockey team. “I’m sorry to have to tell you that I have declared a mistrial in this case,” Justice Carroccia told the jury. “As a result of that, this jury is discharged. Thank you very much for your attention and your service, although it was brief.” The ruling from a judge in Ontario means a new trial will be held for Michael McLeod, Carter Hart, Alex Formenton, Dillon Dube and Callan Foote, pictured, who have all pleaded not guilty to sexual assault. McLeod also pleaded not guilty to an additional charge of being a party to the offense of sexual assault. The trial began Wednesday and the prosecution’s first witness briefly took the stand before testimony was put on hold for legal arguments. Ontario Superior Court Justice Maria Carroccia brought jurors back Friday morning and said they were being discharged. The charges relate to an encounter that took place in an Ontario hotel room in June 2018 when members of the team were in London for a Hockey Canada gala.
Peterson arrested, faces DWI charge
Former star running back Adrian Peterson was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving early Friday in Minnesota after appearing at an NFL draft party for Vikings fans. According to Hennepin County jail records, Peterson was booked at 5:16 a.m. and released from custody at 7:31 a.m. on a $4,000 bond. The 40-year-old faces a fourth-degree misdemeanor charge of driving while impaired and a court date in Minneapolis on May 9. State Patrol Lt. Mike Lee told the Minnesota Star Tribune that a trooper observed Peterson driving 83 mph in a 55-mph zone and administered a preliminary breath test that measured his blood alcohol content at 0.14%. The legal limit for driving in Minnesota is 0.08%. Peterson was traveling on a suburban freeway about 8 miles south of U.S. Bank Stadium, where the Vikings held their public event around the first round of the NFL draft on Thursday night. Peterson was one of several former Vikings players who took part in the festivities. Peterson, who lives in the Houston area, was the seventh overall pick by the Vikings in the 2007 draft.
USC recruit Arenas is out of coma
Alijah Arenas, the Southern California basketball recruit who was involved in a fiery vehicle accident, is out of an induced coma, his family said in a statement Friday. The 18-year-old Arenas remains intubated, his family told ESPN, but has “shown significant signs of progress within the last 24 hours.” The Los Angeles Police Department said officers responded shortly before 5 a.m. Thursday to single-vehicle collision in the Reseda area of the San Fernando Valley. The LA Fire Department further said the vehicle was a Tesla Cybertruck that crashed into a tree and a fire hydrant with fire involved. The family said Arenas remembered the smoke from the crash and wrote to ask, “Did anyone get hurt?” No cause of the crash has been released. The family expressed its gratitude to those who have helped Arenas and said further updates would be shared “as Alijah continues to heal.” Arenas is a son of former NBA player Gilbert Arenas. He attends Chatsworth High School in Los Angeles, where he became the first prep boys player to score 3,000 career points. —Associated Press
