As the veteran on a youthful United States men’s swim team, Caeleb Dressel added another relay victory to his long list on Saturday night in Paris, anchoring the winning 4x100-meter freestyle team as the Americans beat out rival Australia by more than a second. The 27-year-old Florida native now has eight golds and five of those in relay events. The U.S., with Dressel, right, also won the 4x100 free relay at the Tokyo and Rio de Janeiro Games.

Victor Wembanyama had 19 points, nine rebounds, four steals and three blocks to help France overcome an early deficit and hold off Brazil 78-66 to open the group stage in the men’s basketball tournament in Lille. Afterward, the 20-year-old NBA Rookie of the Year marveled at how his teammates deferred to him during a second quarter when France needed someone to provide a spark. “It’s about sacrifices,” Wembanyama said. “We’re all here for a purpose.”

STILL KICKING

Djordje Mihailovic converted a penalty as the U.S. men’s soccer team pounced early in a 4-1 victory over New Zealand to stave off possible elimination. A loss in Marseille could have ended the Americans’ chance to advance to the knockout round.
