Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Tuesday made an appeal to President Donald Trump, saying their meeting at the White House was “regrettable.”
Tensions flared during that meeting as Trump and Zelenskyy pointed fingers at one another over the Ukraine-Russia war. Zelenskyy later refused to apologize to Trump, preceding his decision to revoke all U.S. aid from Ukraine.
In his X post Tuesday, however, Zelenskyy appeared to extend an olive branch to the United States.
“I would like to reiterate Ukraine’s commitment to peace,” he wrote. “My team and I stand ready to work under President Trump’s strong leadership to get a peace that lasts. We do really value how much America has done to help Ukraine maintain its sovereignty and independence.
“Our meeting in Washington, at the White House on Friday, did not go the way it was supposed to be. It is regrettable that it happened this way. It is time to make things right. We would like future cooperation and communication to be constructive.”
Reacting to the post was Rep. Mike Lawler, R-N.Y.
“Let’s get the deal done and bring about lasting peace and prosperity for the United States, Ukraine, Europe and the free world!” he wrote.
Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., also responded with a thumbs up emoji, adding “Better days are ahead.”
The White House meeting sparked an international response with the United Kingdom hosting a European summit to support Ukraine. Britain and France are now collaborating on a ceasefire plan to present to the United States that could end the fighting.
Former President Joe Biden also expressed frustration with Zelenskyy, according to NBC News. Biden reportedly lost “his temper” and demanded Ukraine “show a little more gratitude” to the U.S.
“Biden had barely finished telling Zelenskyy that he had just greenlighted another $1 billion in U.S. military assistance for Ukraine when Zelenskyy started listing all the additional help he needed and wasn’t getting,” the outlet wrote in October.
