Tom Brady is recovering from offseason knee surgery and expects to be ready for June minicamp with the Buccaneers. Speaking at a fundraiser for Bucs coach Bruce Arians’ foundation, the 43-year-old quarterback joked that he didn’t know “if I can go this week.” He then added he’s aiming to be back on the field relatively soon for the Super Bowl champions. “I feel pretty good and I push myself pretty hard. ... It’s good progress. It’s rehab.” Bucs players, along with those from more than half the league’s teams, have said they will not attend voluntary offseason workouts, which could begin Monday. Minicamps are mandatory for players fit to participate. Arians has said the quarterback’s recovery is progressing well and there’s a chance Brady could for minicamp if the Bucs have one. Brady signed with the Bucs in free agency in March 2020 after 20 seasons with the Patriots. He threw for 4,633 yards, 40 TDs and 12 INTs in his first year with the Bucs, who finished on an eight-game winning streak that included three straight playoff road wins and a win in the Super Bowl at their home stadium.
Chet Holmgren, the nation’s top recruit, announced he’s heading to Gonzaga on the same day star guard Jalen Suggs announced he’s leaving the Bulldogs after one season to enter the NBA draft. Holmgren said on ESPN that he will play for the Bulldogs. He will likely play only one college season. Holmgren had also been considering Ohio State, Michigan, UNC, Minnesota, Memphis and Georgetown. Holmgren combines the skills of a guard with a 7-foot-1 frame and he’s projected to be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2022 draft. As a senior at Minnehaha Academy in Minnesota, Holmgren averaged 20.8 points, 12.6 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 4.7 blocks, shooting 80% from the field. Holmgren is following in the footsteps of Suggs, above, a close friend and former teammate. Suggs had a stellar freshman season, capped off by hitting one of the most memorable shots in Final Four history, a buzzer-beating 3-pointer that sent Gonzaga into the national championship game. The Zags lost to Baylor in the title game. Suggs, considered a top pick, averaged 14.4 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.5 assists as a freshman.
Tottenham fired Jose Mourinho on Monday after only 17 months in charge, and just as he was preparing to coach the club in the League Cup final. Mourinho was hired in November 2019 to replace Mauricio Pochettino, who unexpectedly led the London club to the Champions League final before the team collapsed the following season. Mourinho failed to get Tottenham back into the Champions League and has overseen another collapse this season. The team was in first place in December but a run of poor results has seen it fall to seventh place. Mourinho’s exit comes ahead of Sunday’s League Cup final against Manchester City. Tottenham, which hasn’t won a trophy since the 2008 League Cup, said youth coach Ryan Mason had been put in charge of training. It’s the 58-year-old Mourinho’s shortest spell at a club since breaking into the big time with Porto in 2004. Disgruntlement over his tactics and methods have resurfaced in recent months, with Tottenham slipping out of the Champions League places and getting eliminated from the Europa League in the round of 16. —AP
