A Baltimore Safe Streets worker who was shot in August while off-duty just blocks from his workplace died from his injuries.

An employee of Catholic Charities announced the death of the violence interrupter, noting that he and the Sandtown Site director went to the hospital to see him after the shooting and to “support his family,” according to an email obtained by FOX45 News.

The employee, who has not been named publicly by City Hall, was shot just before 10 p.m. on Aug. 10 along the 1300 block of North Carey Street in the Western Police District. The shooting took place within the Sandtown Winchester Safe Streets catchment zone, and less than a half-mile away from the Safe Streets site itself. It’s unclear how long the employee worked for the Safe Streets program.

The Sandtown shooting came just weeks after a former Penn North Safe Streets was shot — also along North Carey Street. Brandon Tucker was employed at the Penn North Safe Streets site from April 1 through mid-May 2024, according to Catholic Charities, which also manages that location. Catholic Charities declined to explain why Tucker’s employment with Safe Streets was so short. Tucker died from his injuries a few days after he was shot.

Baltimore Police said both incidents are being investigated independently.

When asked if he’s concerned about the cases being connected or relating to retaliation, Mayor Brandon Scott said retaliation is always a concern whenever “there’s an act of violence.”

“It doesn’t matter if it’s a Safe Streets worker, it doesn’t matter if it’s you or me or someone’s brother,” he added.

Despite the latest shooting, and Tucker’s death — even though he wasn’t a Safe Streets employee at the time he was shot and killed — Scott doubled down on his commitment to the violence intervention program.

“When police officers get shot, we don’t say we aren’t going to have police officers,” he said.
