Shortly after arriving at North County High School on Aug. 30, Vanessa Witte’s heart stopped. Two students, school resource officers and a nurse quickly worked together to save her life.

“It was a frantic scene, but these professionals were superb,” said Monique Jackson, Chief Student and Systemic Support Officer, who introduced those involved at Wednesday’s Board of Education meeting. “Whether you are an AACPS employee, a partner agency, a parent, or a student, you are part of our family, and no matter what, family helps family.”

Students Angel Zuniga Sanchez and Ashton Cline saw Witte collapse and alerted staff. School nurse Elizabeth Kari and school resource officers Mathew Da Raw and Craig Madonna arrived and performed CPR, eventually using a defibrillator until paramedics arrived.

Superintendent Mark Bedell honored the students, officers and nurse with a certificate of appreciation Wednesday.

Witte has recovered, returned to school and attended the ceremony.

In addition to Bedell and the board members, the honorees were recognized by North County Principal Sara Thomas, Chief of Police Amal Awad, County Health Officer Tonii Gedin, and Chief of Staff for County Executive Steuart Pittman, Jenny Proebstle.
