A 50-year-old man was fatally shot Friday morning in Northwest Baltimore around the corner from the place where a 16-year-old boy was fatally shot Thursday night, according to police.

Police Commissioner Kevin Davis, who responded to the scene Friday afternoon, said police do not believe the two fatal shootings are related.

“We believe with certainty that the murder this morning is in no way, shape or form related to the murder last night,” he said. “They are not associated with each other beyond the immediate geography where they occurred.”

Davis said there was a patrol officer deployed in the area after the youth’s shooting Thursday night, and that officer was in the area when the man was shot Friday morning while riding a bicycle.

T.J. Smith, a police spokesman, said it was a “mere coincidence” that the two shootings happened when and where they did.

Police said officers were dispatched to Norfolk and Wolcott avenues in the city’s Forest Park neighborhood about 10:10 a.m. Friday and found the man suffering from gunshot wounds. The man has died, police said, and homicide detectives are investigating.

The man was identified as Victor Lane of the 300 block of Bloom St., which is about three miles away.

Davis said a preliminary investigation into Lane’s killing gave “every indication that it may be domestic-related.”

Less than 14 hours before, about 8:45 p.m. Thursday, officers had been called to the 4000 block of Norfolk Ave. for a shooting and found the 16-year-old boy suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Police identified the boy Friday as Shaquan Raymone Trusty of the 4300 block of Liberty Heights Ave., about a half-mile away.

He was taken to an area hospital, where he died, police said. Homicide detectives investigating his death have not established a suspect or motive, police said.

Davis said police found a firearm on the youth. They also found a blood trail leading away from the scene, and police believe the suspect in his shooting may have been shot and wounded as well.

“A 16-year-old young man shot and killed is a concern to all of us. It’s a concern to the families, to the school system, to the neighborhoods, to law enforcement,” Davis said. “As we get further into the investigation and figure out why this young man decided to have a gun in his possession last night, [that] will undoubtedly provoke further conversations about what we need to do as a society to get to a better place with less violence.”

Smith said Trusty was the third juvenile shot and killed in Baltimore this year. Twelve juveniles have received nonfatal gunshot wounds this year.

In all of 2016, 15 juveniles were killed and 44 received nonfatal gunshot wounds. In all of 2015, 22 juveniles were killed and 52 received nonfatal gunshot wounds.
