Elon Musk, owner of social media platform X, said he believes Vice President Kamala Harris will try to shut down his platform if elected president.

The comment came during a lengthy interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson. Carlson asked Musk whether he thinks the site will “continue in its current form” if Harris wins in November.

“They will try to shut it down by any means possible. They might try to pass laws. They’ll try to prosecute the company, prosecute me. The amount of lawfare we’ve seen taking place is outrageous,” Musk speculated.

Musk cited a recent Department of Justice lawsuit against his spacecraft manufacturing company, SpaceX, for allegedly failing to hire asylum seekers. Musk referred to other existing laws that state his company was only allowed to hire permanent U.S. residents.

“We’re damned if you do, damned if you don’t,” he said. “They can only do a fairly small number of lawsuits every year, so why did they pick this one? Lawfare.”

X has already been the target of significant international action. European Union Commissioner for Internal Market and Services Thierry Breton in August sent a letter to Musk demanding he comply with European Union digital law ahead of an interview with former President Donald Trump.

The letter acknowledged the impending interview and urged Musk to remember the Digital Services Act, a European Union regulation addressing online disinformation and hate speech.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes in August also ordered the suspension of X after Musk refused to comply with a law requiring foreign companies to appoint a legal representative to operate in the country. X removed its previous legal representative after she was allegedly threatened with arrest.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Saturday warned social media platforms must take responsibility for moderating their content or risk losing control. She specifically mentioned Musk’s platform during her comment.

“It’s not just the social and psychological effects, it’s real harm,” Clinton said. “It’s child porn and threats of violence, things that are terribly dangerous.”
