Rep. Tom Suozzi, D-N.Y., has called on Democrats to “try something different” with their approach to President-elect Donald Trump, including finding “compromise” during his second term in the Oval Office.

The representative began an op-ed in The New York Times on Wednesday by predicting his party will “be tempted to hold fast against Mr. Trump at every turn.” This, he said, “would be a mistake.”

Only by working together to find compromise on parts of Trump’s agenda can we make progress for Americans who are clearly demanding change in the economy, immigration, crime and other top issues,” Suozzi wrote.

Democrats, he continued, should seek to make compromises with Trump instead of becoming “the Party of No.”

“I know many voters reject my party’s significant leftward shift,” Suozzi wrote. “So do I. But as a common-sense Democrat who won in a district that Mr. Trump also won, I am certain our closely divided electorate would rather have bipartisan solutions than political gridlock.”

“Americans are tired of “endless finger-pointing, nit-picking and daily battling,” the representative continued.

“Some members of my party and left-leaning advocacy groups are now branding themselves as the leaders of a national ‘resistance’ movement, reflexively opposing ideas from the incoming administration,” he added. “That’s a bad idea.”

The Democratic Party, Suozzi added, should reject its “more extreme members” and focus on cooperating with Republicans.

“If Republicans and Democrats choose the path of division and overreach, they will deepen the partisan divides that have already weakened our democracy,” he wrote. “But if they embrace bipartisanship and cooperation, 2025 can be a better year for all Americans. We have to remember that the ultimate goal of government should be serving the American people, not our respective parties.”

Rep. Suozzi in April called on his party to reject Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., in her push to unseat House Speaker Mike Johnson.

“Democrats must work with Republicans to disarm @RepMTG who is parroting Putin,” Rep. Suozzi posted on X. “Let’s get a vote to support Ukraine and Israel, and defeat Russian disinformation.”

He also noted in March that “people on the far right and the far left are controlling the debate all the time.”

“Most people are somewhere in the middle,” the congressman claimed.

Multiple Democrats have taken an open-minded approach to Trump following his election victory. Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., said in an interview last month that people voted for Trump to “protect and project” the country.

“I’m not ever gonna be where I want a president to fail,” he added. “So, country first. I know that’s become, like, a cliché, but it happens to be truth.”
