NEW YORK — A pair of 2023 All-Stars received some bad news this weekend.

The Orioles optioned struggling reliever Yennier Cano to Triple-A Norfolk on Sunday, and interim manager Tony Mansolino announced that catcher Adley Rutschman will be out through the All-Star break after he suffered a “mild” oblique strain during batting practice Friday.

Right-hander Yaramil Hiraldo was recalled to give Baltimore’s taxed bullpen a fresh arm.

Rutschman, 27, landed on the 10-day injured list for the first time in his career Saturday, a blow in what has been a trying season for the two-time All-Star. He’s hitting .227 with eight home runs and a .691 OPS in 68 games this year after finishing the 2024 campaign in an extended slump.

“He wants to play,” Mansolino said. “He’s kind of going stir crazy, and I think the fact that it is mild in nature probably makes it a little harder for him. … Oblique injuries, if you push those things, it could get really ugly, and instead of being three, four weeks, it could be three months.”

With Rutschman sidelined, the Orioles called up Maverick Handley to replace him but he left Sunday’s 4-2 loss to the Yankees after a collision with Jazz Chisholm Jr. at home plate.

Between Rutschman getting scratched Friday and Handley exiting in the second inning Sunday, Gary Sánchez caught 24 of the Orioles’ 25 innings this weekend.

“We’re evaluating everything right now, so nothing official on concussion protocol,” Mansolino said of Handley. “There’s obviously a chance that that happens. We’ll have more information tomorrow on him.”Top prospect Samuel Basallo, 20, is having a strong season at Triple-A with 15 home runs and a .973 OPS, but injuries have limited him to only 16 starts behind the plate and Mansolino downplayed the possibility of Baltimore calling him up anytime soon.

Cano, 31, has a 4.73 ERA in 32 appearances this season. The once-premier setup man has been pitching in lower-leverage spots the past couple of weeks; he was one of Baltimore’s few relievers with minor league options.

The Orioles have leaned on their bullpen heavily for innings during their ongoing road trip as starters Zach Eflin, Tomoyuki Sugano and Trevor Rogers all failed to pitch deep into games in their respective outings.

Cano became a casualty of that despite striking out the side in a scoreless appearance Saturday.

“It starts, ultimately, with the amount of innings that we’ve had to cover here recently,” Mansolino said. “We have to look at the last three, four months, last year, and understand that Yenni Cano has been good at times. It’s been up and down. I think everybody can admit that, and I think this could be a really good opportunity for Yenni to go down right now and kind of make the small adjustment, whatever needs to be made, in order to get back to being Yennier Cano.”

Hiraldo, 29, made his MLB debut with the Orioles on May 27 for the lone big-league appearance of his career. He has a 3.71 ERA with 26 strikeouts and six walks over 17 innings in Norfolk this season.

Around the horn

Third baseman Jordan Westburg’s sprained left index finger was still sore Sunday morning, and he wasn’t yet able to grip a bat, Mansolino said. The Orioles are optimistic Westburg avoided a major injury and hope he will be able to return to the lineup in the next two to three days.

After pausing his rehabilitation assignment June 14, Tyler O’Neill (neck) reported to High-A Aberdeen on Sunday to get back into game action. The veteran outfielder has been on the injured list, his second stint this season, since May 15. He’s played only 24 games and hit .188 with two home runs after joining Baltimore on a three-year deal last winter.
