Mahershala Ali, Marc Platt reflect on the Oscars
Mahershala Ali credits the four years he spent on the filmed-in-Baltimore series “House of Cards” with giving him the career boost that led to his winning a best supporting actor Oscar last Sunday night for his performance in “Moonlight.”
“?‘House of Cards’ is the reason I’m here,” said Ali, who played Remy Danton, communications director for Kevin Spacey’s Frank Underwood in the Netflix series.
As for what his former boss might say about the confusion over which film won best picture (“La La Land” was first announced as the winner, then “Moonlight”), Ali had no trouble channeling Frank Underwood for a moment.
“Bah, humbug,” he said with a smile.
Reflecting on the Oscar flub, Pikesville native Marc Platt, one of the producers of “La La Land,” refused to be upset about his film’s short stint as a best picture Oscar winner. “I’m a great admirer of ‘Moonlight,’?” he said. “The right movie, the one that got voted to win, won and got recognized. It would have been way worse, had the mistake not been discovered until a long time later.”
