Virus fears push back spring season start, basketball state championships
In the past week, the coronavirus pandemic has led to the cancellation and postponement of high school and college sport events across the state.
The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association state basketball championships have been postponed, and the start of the spring sports season has been pushed back to no earlier than April 6. Here’s a list of events that have been affected due to concerns related to the coronavirus: MPSSAA state basketball championships On March11— the day before the start of the three-day state basketball championships at Towson University’s SECU Arena and the University of Maryland’s Xfinity Center — the MPSSAA announced that the tournaments would go on as scheduled but the games would be played without fans or media in attendance.
The only people permitted to attend, according to the MPSSAA, were “essential Tournament staffing; Participating teams limited to the official party of 21 as detailed on page 8 of the MPSSAA Winter Bulletin; Certified Athletic Trainer of participating teams; Officials; Parents or legal guardians of participating players and significant other of coaching staff; Superintendent or Superintendent designee for Athletics; See SPORTS, page 6
