Sept. 12, 1987:After Maryland's 21-19 football victory over Virginia β€” Joe Krivak's first win as head coach β€” he celebrates by singing the school's fight song in the locker room. β€œCan he sing? Hey, can anyone sing? It's not important,” says the Terps' Azizuddin Abdur-Ra'oof (Northeast), who contributes a touchdown reception.

Sept. 12, 1970:Held scoreless for three quarters, the Colts drop a preseason game to the Washington Redskins, 17-14, at RFK Stadium. Johnny Unitas throws two interceptions and rookie Jim O'Brien misses two field-goal attempts for the Colts, who lose to Washington for the first time in 20 outings.

Sept. 13, 1969:The Orioles' seventh straight win, 10-5 over the Cleveland Indians, gives manager Earl Weaver's team the American League East title. Champagne flows and players throw all team officials (except Weaver) into an icy whirlpool.

Sept. 17, 1960:Navy running back Joe Bellino rushes for one touchdown, passes for another and catches a scoring pass in a 22-7 victory at Boston College. Bellino goes on to win the Heisman Trophy.

Sept. 11, 1957: Six hours before a doubleheader, and after a deluge, the Orioles hire a helicopter to hover 6 feet above the outfield grass to dry the turf at Memorial Stadium. That accomplished, the Orioles split with the Kansas City Athletics.

Sept. 16, 1896: Cardinal Gibbons, archbishop of Baltimore, presents each member of the National League champion Orioles with a solid-gold, heart-shaped charm engraved with a cross and a crown of thorns.

Birthday

Sept. 15, 1917: Buddy Jeannette, a Hall of Fame point guard who led the Baltimore Bullets to the Basketball Association of America championship in 1948. He became coach and general manager of the modern Bullets in the 1960s. Jeannette died in 1998.
