Maryland House Minority Leader Jason Buckel, a Republican from Allegany County, was arrested on DUI and other charges, court records show.

Maryland State Police stopped Buckel at 11:23 p.m. Thursday when he was driving east on U.S. 40 near Campground Road in Cumberland, police said.

The delegate was cited for:

Driving under the influence of alcohol.

Driving while impaired by alcohol.

Driving on a suspended license.

Negligent driving in a careless and imprudent manner.

Failure to display a registration card upon demand by a police officer.

In a statement Monday via text, Buckel expressed his “regret that this incident ever occurred,” but said that he did not drink too much, speed or drive erratically.

He said he was not feeling well Thursday afternoon and had taken some over-the-counter medication. When he went to a restaurant to watch an NHL game, “I did not over consumer [sic] any alcoholic beverages.”

He said the trooper stopped him on his way home.

“I was not speeding. I was not driving erratically in any way,” Buckel wrote.

Buckel is scheduled to appear July 24 in Allegany County District Court for an initial hearing.

He said he would continue his legislative work, participate in the legal process “and abide by the outcome.”

It was not immediately clear whether Buckel, a lawyer himself, is being represented by an attorney.

According to court records, he had his license suspended last summer after allegedly going 79 mph on Interstate 68.

After not responding to the citation, court records show a suspension for Buckel’s license was issued. Buckel paid the citation Friday, the day after his new DUI charges, court records show. The suspension for the speeding ticket was recalled after the payment.
