Mayor announces amnesty for
late fees on city parking tickets
Mayor Catherine Pugh on Wednesday announced an amnesty program forgiving late fees on outstanding parking fines in Baltimore.
If people with unpaid parking tickets pay the base fine on Feb. 1 or Feb. 2, late fees and other charges will be waived, the mayor said.
It’s the first such amnesty on late fees in 15 years in Baltimore.
“We estimate there is some half-million parking citations owned by 320,000 motorists eligible for this program,” Pugh said.
Henry Raymond, the city’s director of finance, said Baltimore officials would notify eligible motorists by mail in the next few days.
The last time the city offered an amnesty, in 2003, about one-third of delinquent motorists paid their tickets, Raymond said. He estimated the program this year could bring in between $3 million and $4 million.
Raymond said he did not immediately have an estimate on how much revenue the city could potentially forgo by offering the amnesty.
