Broadneck clinches berth in Anne Arundel final

Broadneck’s boys basketball team accomplished plenty with one win on Thursday.
The No. 12 Bruins’ 56-45 victory over North County not only clinched a berth in Saturday’s Anne Arundel County championship game, it also wrapped up the regular-season county championship. The Bruins will also go into the Class 4A East Region playoff as the top seed. They’ll have a bye in the first round and will open the playoffs at home on March 4.
“We’re really excited. It was one of our goals to be the in-season county champs,” Broadneck coach John Williams said. “We’ll go to North County on Saturday and hopefully give Old Mill our best shot.”
Broadneck (17-4 overall, 14-2 county) will face Old Mill on Saturday at 5 p.m. in the county championship game at North County. Broadneck won its last county championship in 2011, while the Patriots have won the last two. The Bruins won the teams’ regular-season meeting, 64-61.
“They’re really dynamic and they’re very organized,” Williams said. “I feel like they’ve had this group now for many years and they’ve had a lot of success. They’re battled-tested and I know they’re going to be ready to go on Saturday.”
Broadneck’s Logan Vican led all scorers with 16 points and added 10 rebounds. He scored four quick points in the third quarter to stretch the Broadneck lead to 11. After the Knights cut a 15-point deficit after three quarters to seven on three occasions in the fourth, Vican answered with his final two points at the two-minute mark to help prevent the Knights from getting closer.
“He had a solid game,” Williams said. “I thought he was pretty aggressive and guys were feeding him the ball. We need to be a team that’s going to play inside-out.”
Mike Cantrell followed with 11 points and five steals and Brendan Davis added nine points for the Bruins, who took a 4-2 lead a minute into the game and didn’t trail the rest of the way. The Knights were within two points at the end of the first quarter and tied the game early in the second, but Broadneck answered with a 7-0 run on its way to an 11-point halftime lead.
“I feel as if we’re getting everyone’s best shot, and that’s a lot of fun,” Williams said. “It’s prepping us for hopefully a nice playoff run.”
Shawn Lilly scored eight points in the fourth quarter and finished with 12 points to lead North County (4-17). He hit a pair of 3-pointers in the quarter that brought the Knights to within seven points each time.
“We felt that we could be a dangerous team and figured if we could last until the fourth, maybe we could become a spoiler,” North County coach Trumaine Johnson said. “We just had a few missed shots and some poor execution on defense down the stretch, and they capitalized.”
Kyle Silver added 10 points, including a 3-pointer two minutes into the fourth that was part of an 8-0 run that got the Knights back in the game.
The Knights will now await Tuesday’s draw to determine their playoff seeding. They’ll most likely open the playoffs on the road on March 1.
“It’s a new season,” Johnson said. “I’m just looking for them to give maximum effort, and as long as we play together we can actually do well.”
