The muralist behind the Baltimore Love Project has taken his artistic skills to Orlando, Fla., to create a tribute to the victims of the Pulse nightclub shooting.

Michael Owen, a former Orlando resident, created a mural across the street from the nightclub. In shades of lavender and purple, hands spell out the word “LOVE” amid a growing tribe of orange blossoms.

“I wanted to create this art that maybe looks a little somber at first, but when you look deeper, you see these expressive flowers, and you see the character and the life in them,” said Michael Owen, who returned to Orlando to honor those killed. “I wanted it to take that tragedy and point to something else — a potential for new life, a potential for growth, a potential for love to grow out of this.”

Owen started the Baltimore Love Project in 2007, with the goal of painting 20 walls throughout the city, each with the same single message of love.

He wanted to bring that same sentiment to his former hometown.

“People can look at the mural and put their own story in,” Owen said of the Orlando mural.

“It's not limited to people who have a certain color hand or sexuality or religious affiliation. It's just people.”
