Two men in their 70s were shot, one fatally, on Thursday at a Baltimore senior living facility, Police Commissioner Richard Worley said.
A 65-year-old suspect is in custody after the shooting near 110 North Central Ave., the Pleasant View Gardens senior community, Worley said.
Officers responded to the scene at about 11:07 a.m. Thursday. A 79-year-old man died in the building, and a 72-year-old was critically injured, Worley said. Other residents of the senior living community were told to shelter in place.
Police did not immediately identify the two men who were shot or the 65-year-old suspect, who Worley said uses a wheelchair.
The suspect, a man who is a resident of the facility, was found after SWAT teams swept the building, police said in a news release. A weapon was recovered.
A Baltimore City Public Schools spokesperson said that the National Academy Foundation and Dunbar High School were both placed on “restricted movement,” a type of lockdown prompted by nearby police activity and that the schools would communicate updates to families.
Police have not determined a motive for the shooting, but Worley noted that he would “assume” the people involved know each other, as the suspect is a resident.
Asked if the two men who were shot were residents, a police spokesperson said that the homicide “is still in its early stages of investigation.”
“Detectives are currently on the scene, piecing together all aspects of the shooting,” spokesperson Vernon Davis said.
