Helen Elizabeth “Betty” Walters, a homemaker and who enjoyed swimming, died of a stroke April 30 at her home in Bay Woods of Annapolis. The former Timonium resident was 84.

Born Helen Elizabeth Scheuch in Baltimore, she was the daughter of John Scheuch, a grocer, and his wife, Helen Menkel. She lived above her parents' Winchester Street grocery store and was a 1950 graduate of Western High School.

She met her future husband, Howard H. Walters, at a St. Paul's Lutheran Church Sunday school class. After dating for many years, they married in 1952 after his graduation from the University of Maryland College Park. They immediately moved to Presque Isle, Maine, where her husband served in the Air Force during the Korean War.

They returned to Baltimore and lived on Poplar Grove Street. They moved 11 times when her husband, who was to become president of Bell Atlantic Properties, was assigned to oversee construction of telephone-related structures. After his retirement, they moved to Prospect Bay at Grasonville and later lived at Cape St. Claire in Annapolis.

Mrs. Walters enjoyed classical music and played the piano. She also belonged to community bridge leagues. She was a gardener and entertained family and friends. She swam in the Magothy River, at Ocean City and Duck, N.C., where she had a summer home.

A celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m. today at Bay Woods of Annapolis, 7101 Bay Front Drive.

Survivors include a son, Scott Howard Walters of Annapolis; two daughters, Diane Walters Green of Shady Side and Susan K. Lewis of Aberdeen; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Her husband of 63 years died in 2014.
