Steven Allen Hardin, a retired tugboat captain who had served in the U.S. Navy Reserve and enjoyed attending concerts, died June 25 at Gilchrist Hospice Care in Towson from cancer. The longtime Parkville resident was 71.

Born in Indianapolis, he was the son of Hiram A. Hardin, a career Army officer, and Margaret L. Hardin, a homemaker.

Due to travel related to his father’s career, he was raised at military bases around the nation and world. He attended Cedar Cliff High School in Plainfield, Ind., and graduated there in 1965. He then entered the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, N.Y., graduating in 1969.

As a member of the Navy Reserve, Mr. Hardin served as an ensign in Saigon Harbor, now Ho Chi Minh City.

He sailed for more than three decades as a tugboat captain in Baltimore Harbor for Baker-Whiteley Towing Co. and McAllister Towing and Transportation Co.

He retired in 2003.

Mr. Hardin was an active member of the Severna Park Evangelical Presbyterian Church, where he volunteered with the church’s food pantry ministry.

He had a lifelong love of music, which began when he played saxophone in the high school band and was a member of a local dance band combo. While in college, he was a member of the academy’s regimental band and led the band as drum major in 1969 during President Richard M. Nixon’s inaugural parade.

Mr. Hardin enjoyed attending concerts and dancing, and traveled to see every new production of Cirque du Soleil, family members said.

When he was in his 50s and 60s, he was a runner who competed in 17 marathons and 15 half-marathons, and six tall-building climbs.

“He never married but came close a couple of times,” said a sister, Susan Swope Hawver of Plainfield, Ind.

Plans for a celebration of life service are incomplete.

In addition to his sister, he is survived by three brothers, Kent Hardin of Metairie, La., Chris Hardin of Conroe, Texas, and John Hardin of Plainfield, Ind.; another sister, Kathleen Hardin List of Plainfield, Ind.; and many nieces and nephews.
