Overlea’s football team has forfeited its regional semifinal playoff victory after using an ineligible player, so Reginald Lewis will advance to Friday night’s Class 1A North regional championship game against Dunbar.

The violation turns Overlea’s 28-12 win over Lewis into a 2-0 forfeit and sends top-seeded Lewis to the regional final for a second straight year.

Mike Sye, coordinator of athletics for the Baltimore County public schools, confirmed the forfeit Monday, saying Overlea “had to forfeit the game due to a player in violation of Baltimore County — not state of Maryland but Baltimore County — residency regulations.”

He said Overlea reported the violation and that another school also reported it. He did not name the other school. Sye reported it to the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association and the forfeit was official Monday.

Sye said Overlea did not forfeit all its wins because the player was used only in the regional semifinal. Overlea, which has reached the state final seven times, finishes the season 7-4.

With the forfeit, top-seeded Reginald Lewis is 11-0 and will meet Dunbar (9-1) at Mervo on Friday at 6 p.m. The game features a clash of Baltimore City division champions. The Falcons won the Division II title while Dunbar took the Division I title. The two haven’t met since 2014, and the Poets have won both previous meetings.

Last year, the Falcons won the first playoff game in the history of their football program before falling to Edmondson in the 1A South regional final. Dunbar played in Class 2A last season and reached the state semifinal for the 18th time in program history before falling to eventual champion Walkersville.
