The Market House in Annapolis will be closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays for the remainder of this winter due to inactivity on those days. The Market House instituted winter hours in January and will be closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays for the rest of the month.

The food market will be open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday.

The food market does well on Sundays and Mondays, partner Michele Bouchard said, but struggles to pull enough business on Tuesday and Wednesday to justify the labor costs. “Things are getting a little better now that the days are getting longer,” Bouchard said. “We’ll probably reopen Wednesdays in March.”

There are still enough tourists to support business on Sundays. Mondays, some of the other downtown eateries close for the day, diverting lunch and dinner crowds to the Market House.

But midweek, crowds thin. The cold and rainy weather of recent weeks hasn’t helped. The corner grocery continues to struggle. Tourists peruse and purchase more quintessentially Maryland items — crab marinara, Old Bay seasoning, Wye River soups. But the typical grocery store items — produce, eggs, cheese — go in dribs and drabs.

Bouchard fusses over the stock and placement, trying to entice customers. But things are still slow going, and more often than not, produce gets used in the kitchen rather than sold to customers.

“I think that it’s just hard to park here and come in and grab what you want to grab,” Bouchard said.

Despite slow weekdays, weekend sales have exceeded expectations, and the Market House will continue with its regular Friday and Saturday hours.
