The Trump administration’s Department of Housing and Urban Development plans to revoke $4 million worth of diversity, equity and inclusion contracts, Secretary Scott Turner announced Thursday.
Turner made the announcement on Fox News and argued the money is not currently being spent in ways that benefit American taxpayers. These funds come on top of an additional $260 million uncovered by HUD’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) task force.
“We’re working hard and we will cut $4 million in DEI-focused contracts,” Turner said. “This is money that should go to serve the American people and also time well spent to serve the people we’re called to serve.
“DEI here at HUD is dead.”
The move comes on the heels of Turner’s decision to halt the enforcement of an Obama administration-era “gender identity” rule. That rule expanded HUD’s definition of “gender identity” to “more clearly reflect the difference between actual and perceived gender identity,” allowing transgender women to use women’s shelter facilities.
“You know, the gender identity stuff is over,” Turner said in an interview earlier this month. “We believe there’s two genders, there’s two sexes, male and female.”
“I’m so glad the president signed that order taking men out of women’s sports, and same here when it comes to housing, when it comes to protecting our women in housing shelters and other places where our women need housing to make sure that they’re protected.”
DOGE head Elon Musk is now weighing “DOGE dividend” payments that would see a portion of the government’s savings returned to American taxpayers. Musk acknowledged via X he would “check with the president” about such an idea.
President Donald Trump told reporters “I love it” when asked about the plan aboard Air Force One Thursday, according to the Associated Press.
