“Everyone knows that I like to wear things tongue-in-cheek… I like to wear things that are different and a little bit flashy. I do love sequins and try to wear them whenever I can,” said the North Baltimore stay-at-home mom of three, who found the Baltimore School for the Arts’ Expressions Stage One event a perfect platform for that added bit of sparkle.
Hobelmann traced her love of those glistening little discs to her wedding in 2000 to Dr. Greg Hobelmann, now medical director of Ashley Addiction Treatment in Havre de Grace. She and her new hubby decided to have some fun — ’70s/’80s style — with the outfits they wore to leave their wedding reception.
“My husband wore his dad’s leisure suit. So I went on the hunt for a dress and I found a good one at Goodwill: a gold sequined dress. That was probably the beginning,” she said.
Fifteen years later, Hobelmann was so well-known for her sequin susceptibility, that her friends threw her a 40th birthday party with “sequin optional attire.”
The legend of the gold sequined dress has lived on, as well.
“[Two years ago for Christmas,] my dad bought me a gold sequined dress with long bell sleeves by Michael Kors. He saw it in a magazine and thought I think Betsey would wear that. I’ve worn it three times since then,” she said.
