The Navy women’s basketball team put together another impressive showing Sunday for another blowout victory, defeating Division III Emory and Henry, 88-57, at Alumni Hall.

It was the squad’s eighth straight victory to open the season, the longest such streak since the 1995-96 team started 11-0.

The scoring output was the Mids’ highest of the season. Navy has won its past three games by a combined 93 points.

“We had a feeling this wasn’t going to be as hard as [some other games] but, frankly, we have played pretty well in some of these nonconference games,” Navy coach Stefanie Pemper said. “We weren’t necessarily expecting an 8-0 record or the margin of victories we’ve had in some of the games. Our team has pretty good focus.”

Hannah Fenske led the Mids with 18 points as four players scored in double figures, including two who came off the bench. Taylor Dunham had 12 points in a starting role, Morgan Taylor added 12 points and freshman Jasmine Bishop had 11 points.

Sophie Gatzounas led Navy with eight rebounds, though the Wasps outrebounded Navy 37-35.

“This team has been one of the best teams I have ever been a part of, to be with every day,” Fenske said. “It’s been a really exciting beginning to our season.”

The victory was Pemper’s 180th at Navy, adding to the record she set Nov. 30, when a win over Monmouth pushed her past Dave Smalley’s 178 career victories.

Columbia 60, UMBC 44: Laura Castaldo scored a game-high 15 points, but the host Retrievers (1-8) fell to the Lions (4-5).

Lakiah Sims added nine points off the bench for UMBC, which lost its sixth straight game.

Charlotte 78, Coppin State 49: Oluwadamilola Oloyede scored a career-high 17 points on 7-for-7 shooting, but it wasn’t enough for the Eagles (1-7) in a blowout loss to the host 49ers (3-5).

Coppin State also got nine points and nine rebounds from Chance Graham, seven points from Maraiyah Smith and six points apiece from Genesis Lucas and Candice Beverly.
