A Texas congressman said lawmakers were placing bets on how long the relationship between President Donald Trump and former Department of Government Efficiency (head Elon Musk was going to last.

Rep. Vicente Gonzalez, D-Texas, said in a CNN interview on Thursday that the lawmakers were wagering on the floor of the House of Representatives over how many months the relationship would last.

“I don’t think you needed to be a genius, though, to foresee that this eruptive and public display of-of divorce was gonna happen at some point. I mean, we had wagers going on on the floor — ‘is this relationship going to last three months, is it gonna last six months?’ ” Gonzalez said. “I don’t think anyone thought it was gonna last a year.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., was asked to comment Friday about Gonzalez’s comments but has not responded to the request.

Musk endorsed Trump after the president was shot during a campaign rally last July. In the following months, he donated to Trump’s bid and vocalized support for the Republican at campaign events and on social media platform X.

The president established DOGE on Inauguration Day, and Musk became the co-head of the White House advisory unit along with businessman Vivek Ramaswamy. Ramaswamy left the position helping Musk lead DOGE to run for Ohio governor.

Musk in the first couple of months at the White House appeared at multiple events with Trump, including in the Oval Office and at Cabinet meetings. In March, the president, calling Musk a patriot, said the businessman was a friend who should be supported. Protests against DOGE, which has promoted a rapid reduction in federal spending, had taken place across the country.

Stock prices for Tesla, which Musk leads, dropped hundreds of dollars, and the businessman appeared in the White House less frequently than in the earlier days of Trump’s second term. Musk announced his departure from the White House last month, expressing thanks in an X post directed at Trump for the opportunity to reduce “wasteful spending.”

Musk still engaged in political talks, though, criticizing the “One Big Beautiful Bill” championed by Trump in TV interviews and on X, calling it a “disgusting abomination” and saying it will “burden American citizens with crushingly unsustainable debt.”

The president, at first expressing disappointment over Musk’s public disapproval, later criticized Musk in several Truth Social posts. The president told reporters Thursday he didn’t know where he and Musk stand.

“Elon and I had a great relationship. I don’t know if we will anymore,” Trump said. “I’m very disappointed in Elon. I’ve helped Elon a lot.”
