William T. “Tom” Moore, a retired Maryland-Virginia Milk Producers field inspector, died May 16 from prostate cancer at Senator Bob Hooper House in Forest Hill. He was 82.

The son of Harry Chambers Moore, a farmer, and Margaret Bell Moore, a teacher, William Thomas Moore was born in Lexington, Va., and raised on the family farm.

After graduating from Fairfield High School in 1953, he obtained a bachelor’s degree in dairy science in 1957 from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Va.

In 1958 Mr. Moore, who was known as “Tom,” joined the Maryland-Cooperative Milk Producers, where he worked as a field inspector until retiring in 2008 from what became the Maryland-Virginia Milk Producers.

The longtime Street resident joined the Army National Guard while in college and remained active until 1985 when he retired.

Mr. Moore was an active member of Highland Presbyterian Church where he had served as an elder, deacon and trustee. He was a member for 40 years of the Jarrettsville Lions Club and had served 32 years as its treasurer.

He was a Ravens season ticket holder and was a devoted Virginia Tech Hokies fan.

He also enjoyed driving his red Ford Mustang and meeting friends for breakfast several days a week at the Taylor Haus Family Restaurant in Stewartstown, Pa., family members said.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at his church, 701 Highland Road, Street.

Mr. Moore is survived by his wife of 58 years, the former Sylvia Greene; two sons, William T. Moore Jr. of Churchville and Stephen Patrick Moore of Street; a daughter, Deborah M. Ulmer of Jarrettsville; a brother, Robert D. “Booty” Moore of Lexington, Va.; a sister, Betty Anne Ferguson of Springfield, Va.; and seven grandchildren.
