Baltimore police investigate homicide

Baltimore police say a 24-year-old man was killed in Curtis Bay on Sunday afternoon, marking the 204th homicide in the city this year. Officers went to the 1600 block of Hazel St. about 12:50 p.m. for a report of a shooting, police said. They found a man outside a tavern suffering from gunshot wounds. The victim was taken to an area hospital and pronounced dead a short time later, police said. Homicide detectives believe the victim and gunman had prior altercations. The previous record for homicides in the city through July 31 was 201 in 1993, when the city had 100,000 more residents. Construction worker fatally struck in Severn

A highway construction worker died from injuries he suffered when he was struck by a truck while working on Route 175 Wednesday. Walter I. Gonzalez-Lopez, 56, of Baltimore died Sunday at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. Anne Arundel County police are investigating the accident. About 9:25 p.m., county police responded to a report of two pedestrians struck on Route 175. Gonzalez-Lopez was struck alongside co-worker Edin O. Romero-Maldonado, 19, also of Baltimore. Romero-Maldonado was seriously injured and taken to the trauma center as well. The two had closed off a portion of Annapolis Road for construction work when a GMC Sierra pickup broke into the closed lane and hit both men, police said. The lane had been closed for more than a half-mile when the pickup entered, police said.

Coast Guard rescues swimmer, 2 lifeguards

A swimmer and two lifeguards were rescued from the water in Ocean City on Sunday afternoon, the U.S. Coast Guard said. Strong currents swept a swimmer into the inlet, prompting two members of the Ocean City Beach Patrol to jump in after the swimmer, but the lifeguards were also swept out by the current, the Coast Guard said. The Coast Guard used a boat to rescue all three from the water. No injuries were reported.

Man falls from Ocean City hotel balcony

A man was critically injured after he fell from a hotel balcony in Ocean City, police said. The 37-year-old man was sitting on a railing when he fell backward early Saturday from a third-floor balcony at the Commander Hotel, The Daily Times reports. Police said alcohol played a role in the incident. They did not release the man’s identity. The man was taken to Peninsula Regional Medical Center for treatment.
