Matt Kavanagh scored 30 seconds into overtime to lift the No. 1 Notre Dame men's lacrosse team to an 8-7 victory over No. 17 Marquette on Wednesday.

The host Fighting Irish improved to 9-1. The Golden Eagles fell to 8-2.

Kavanagh finished with a game-high four goals. Notre Dame led 7-5 going into the fourth quarter, but Marquette scored with 13:32 and 8:51 left in regulation to force overtime.

“We all have great confidence and faith in Matt Kavanagh,” Notre Dame coach Kevin Corrigan said. “Nobody has made more big plays in his college career than he has.”

Nation women

No. 2 Florida 15, Marquette 5: Freshman Lindsey Ronbeck had a career-high five goals to lead the host Gators (13-1, 4-0 Big East) past the Golden Eagles (4-9, 1-2).

Ronbeck scored three of the first four goals during a 15-0 Florida run. The Gators caused 10 turnovers and outshot Marquette 20-19.

No. 20 Cornell 10, No. 12 Penn State 7: Madison Cyr (Winters Mill) had a hat trick, but the host Nittany Lions (9-4) fell to the Big Red (10-1).

Jenna Mosketti (Fallston) gave Penn State a 5-2 lead with 16:53 left in the first half before Cornell went on a 6-0 run and never trailed again.

State men

Salisbury 17, York 5: Carson Kalama (Bel Air) scored a game-high five goals to power the Sea Gulls (16-0, 8-0 Capital Athletic Conference) past the host Spartans (13-3, 6-1).

York tied the score at 1 with 10:12 left in the first quarter before Salisbury scored the next nine goals.

Frostburg State 17, Mary Washington 8: Adam Gross and Tate Rolland each had a hat trick to power the Bobcats (13-3, 4-3 CAC) past the host Eagles (6-9, 3-4).

The game was tied at 3 after the first quarter, but Frostburg State went on a 5-2 run in the second.

Stevenson 18, Lycoming 4: Stephen Banick had two goals and two assists and the Mustangs (9-4, 4-0 Middle Athletic Conference Commonwealth) beat the host Warriors (2-9, 1-3).

Stevenson scored four goals in each of the first three quarters and six goals in the fourth.

State women

No. 1 Maryland 15, No. 11 Princeton 6: Megan Whittle (McDonogh) had five goals and the Terps (13-0) led 10-1 at halftime over the host Tigers (8-3).

Zoe Stukenberg (Marriotts Ridge) had a hat trick for Maryland.

Johns Hopkins 17, UMBC 12: Shannon Fitzgerald had five goals and the host Blue Jays (9-6) used a 10-4 run in the second half to beat the Retrievers (7-6).

Carolyn Jamison (Westminster) had four goals for UMBC.Hopkins' Dene' DiMartino won a game-high nine draws and broke the school's season and career draw records, finishing with 79 and 243, respectively.
