A 25-year-old man from Baltimore was sentenced Friday to 32 years behind bars after pleading guilty to federal charges that he sexually exploited six young girls he met on the IMVU social networking site.
Delroy James Scott, of the Barclay neighborhood in North Baltimore, was also ordered to serve on supervised release for 50 years after his lengthy prison term, according to court records.
Scott was represented by a federal public defender, who did not return a request for comment immediately.
The charges stemmed from Scott’s conduct with six girls, whose ages ranged from 9 to 14. In his plea agreement, Scott, who was 21 at the time, admitted to enticing the girls online to either send explicit photos or meet him in person for sex acts while pretending he was 16 years old.
The agreement, which Scott signed late last year, says that Scott met five of the girls on the virtual avatar-based social networking site IMVU, which is popular with tweens and teenagers.
Representatives for the virtual platform, launched in 2004, which allows members to use 3D avatars and message with others, did not immediately return a request for comment.
The plea agreement lays out a pattern of behavior where Scott coerced the girls, who lived in Maryland, into meeting him or sending explicit photos by assuming false names and pretending to be a teen himself.
He admitted to sending at least three of the victims messages about the virtual “credits” he had purchased in IMVU, suggesting he would gift them credits if they performed sexual acts for him.
If they didn’t, he threatened to show their parents explicit photos and messages they had already exchanged.
In one case, he pressured a 9-year-old girl into meeting her at a Baltimore County apartment by saying he was “gonna spoil u with stuff on imvu.” Once there, he performed sex acts on her.
He met another girl at her middle school in Prince George’s County, the plea agreement says. He also traveled to Allegany County to climb into a 13-year-old girl’s bedroom window, threatening to alert the girl’s mother if she didn’t perform sex acts with him, but leaving after the girl told her mother.
Scott pleaded guilty to coercion and enticement of a minor as well as sexual exploitation of a child. Prosecutors asked U.S. District Judge Ellen Lipton Hollander during Friday’s hearing to sentence Scott to 45 years of incarceration, according to a sentencing memorandum. That sentencing memorandum, filed earlier this month in the U.S. District Court for Maryland, says Scott’s conduct “was disturbing and shows the worst of human nature.”
“The defendant pretended to be a teenage boy himself and proceeded to manipulate the victims for his sexual pleasure,” prosecutors wrote.
