When Severna Park’s Mikie Harmeyer scored 10 goals in his first game this year, it could have served as a warning to the rest of Anne Arundel County that he was in for a big year.

Harmeyer has been on a scoring roll all season, and it continued Monday when he scored five goals and led the Falcons to a 12-9 victory over Broadneck in the county championship game at Glen Burnie.

Harmeyer, who scored the winning goal in overtime of last year’s Class 4A state final, entered Monday’s game with a county-leading 70 goals.

While Harmeyer has been doing the bulk of the scoring for the Falcons, James Maher entered Monday’s game with a team-leading 39 assists to go with his 33 goals. He added to those totals on Monday with two goals and six assists.

Connor Panebianco had two goals and an assist and Joseph Kilpatrick and Kyle Griffith each added goals for the Falcons, who won their fourth straight county championship and 14th since 1998.

Casey Fox, who’s stepped in following the season-ending injury to Shane Carr, stopped seven shots for Severna Park (14-1).

The Falcons enter the playoffs in search of their fourth straight state title and ninth overall, which would tie Hereford for most in the state. Severna Park is the top seed in the Class 4A East Region Section I playoffs and will host the North County-Glen Burnie winner on Friday.

Broadneck (11-3) is the top seed in Section II and will host Annapolis on Friday.

Girls lacrosse

No. 9 South River 9, No. 4 Severna Park 6: Morgan Carter and the Seahawks dampened the effects of a usually impermeable Falcons defense and their hot-shooting offense to capture the Anne Arundel County championship crown for the second time in two years.

With a pair of hat tricks, Carter and Kathleen Sullivan secured South River’s advantage and helped usher in Severna Park’s first loss of the spring.

Unlike last week, when Severna Park (14-1) handily served South Rriver its first county loss, the script was flipped.
