Race fans at Steak 'n Shake in Daytona Beach, Fla., might have done a double-take Sunday night.

Was that really Joe Gibbs and company with the iconic Daytona 500 trophy grabbing a bite to eat?

Yep.

It dates to the first time Joe Gibbs Racing won the Daytona 500, with driver Dale Jarrett in 1993.

“When we won that first Daytona, we didn't know what to do,” Gibbs said. “We wandered into the winner's circle and got Gatorade thrown all over us, grabbed the trophy and went out the back. We didn't know any of this was going on.

“Driving down the street we saw the Steak 'n Shake. We spent the next hour with the fans in there. A few of them were lit up. We had more fun in the parking lot taking pictures. We made up our mind that it was kind of a tradition.”

Sunday's race winner, Denny Hamlin, joked that the tab must have been $13.

“I think it was nine dollars,” Gibbs said. “If we don't get a sponsorship out of this deal, I'm going to be ticked off.”

There might be some competition there, though.

After Penske driver Joey Logano won the Daytona 500 last year, he and his group also celebrated at Steak 'n Shake.

So Hamlin's suggestion might have merit.

“Next time go to Denny's,” Hamlin said.

Dillon in at SHR: Who will replace Tony Stewart in Atlanta this weekend? The smart money is on Ty Dillon taking over for Brian Vickers, who drove the No. 14 Chevy in the Daytona 500.

That seemed to be the case Tuesday when Stewart-Haas announced that Dillon was replacing Stewart, who is recovering from an offseason back injury. But SHR then removed that statement from its website. Later Tuesday, it tweeted that Dillon was indeed going to be Stewart's sub in Atlanta and Vickers will drive at Las Vegas.

Where's the money? NASCAR has stopped its traditional practice of posting prize purses for races because of its new charter system. NASCAR chief operating officer Brent Dewar told NBC Sports the decision was made to stop announcing total purse and individual winnings for each race because “it's not contemporary.”

Hamlin jokingly said he earned “millions, I can't even count it,” when asked during the champion's breakfast on Monday.

For a comparative ballpark figure, last year Logano and Team Penske earned a $1,581,453 payday.
