New Mexico coach Bob Davie won’t make the trip next week when the Lobos travel to face his former team, No. 8 Notre Dame.

Davie said in a statement Thursday that he will be involved with the team next week but that run game coordinator Saga Tuitele will serve as acting head coach for the Sept. 14 game in South Bend.

The 64-year-old Davie was rushed to an Albuquerque hospital Saturday after New Mexico’s season-opening victory over Sam Houston State.

He says he expects to make a full recovery but will be following his wife and doctors’ advice in not making the trip.

The nature of his medical issue hasn’t been disclosed.

Davie is in his eighth season leading New Mexico, where he’s 34-54.

He coached Notre Dame from 1997 to 2001, compiling a 35-25 record and leading the Irish to three bowl games.

Green gets honor: Syracuse is honoring former All-America Tim Green during the Orange’s game against No. 1 Clemson.

Green’s No. 72 jersey will be retired at halftime of the home opener Sept. 14.

A defensive lineman for the Orange, Green is the all-time sacks leader at Syracuse with 45.5. He’s the first predominantly defensive player in the 129-year history of the program to have his jersey retired and the sixth overall.

Fans are invited to participate by wearing a version of a t-shirt that honors Green. A portion of the proceeds from sales of the shirt will be donated to the Tackle ALS Foundation in Green’s honor.

Green, who played linebacker for the NFL’s Falcons for eight years, revealed last year that he has ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, widely known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

Costello out for Stanford: Quarterback K.J. Costello will miss No. 23 Stanford’s Pac-12 opener against Southern California with an injury.

Coach David Shaw said after practice Thursday that Costello was ruled out against the Trojans on Saturday after getting knocked out of season-opening win over Northwestern with a head injury. Davis Mills is expected to make his first career start for the Cardinal.

Costello got hurt in the closing seconds of the first half against Northwestern last week when he was hit with a forearm to the face mask while sliding on a scramble. Costello’s head hit the turf and he was down for several minutes before being helped off the field.

Mills completed 7 of 14 passes for 81 yards and lost two fumbles. He played one game last season, throwing two passes and running once.

Stanford also is without injured left tackle Walker Little. He’s out indefinitely.

NU QB Green done for ’19: Northwestern quarterback TJ Green will miss the rest of the season following foot surgery, coach Pat Fitzgerald confirmed.

Green suffered the injury against Stanford.

Green, the son of former NFL QB Trent Green, served as the Wildcats’ backup the last two seasons and appeared in nine games in 2018. A fifth-year senior, Green could apply for a sixth-year hardship waiver.
