A man is dead following an officer-involved shooting Sunday morning in D.C., according to Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela Smith.
Smith said the shooting occurred at the McDonald’s in the 2500 block of Marion Barry Avenue SE.
Police were initially called to the scene around 5:30 a.m. for a report of a crash, she said. When officers arrived, they saw a vehicle had crashed into the McDonald’s, causing some damage.
The driver of the vehicle was still inside the car but was unresponsive, Smith said. She added he had a gun in his lap.
Officers called for backup, and shortly thereafter, the man started to wake up.
That’s when officers drew their guns and commanded the man to drop his weapon. But Smith said the man instead grabbed the officer’s service weapon.
Two officers then fired their guns, striking the man.
D.C. Fire and EMS were already on the scene and tried to save the man’s life, but he was pronounced dead there.
Police are now working to identify the man and notify his next of kin.
Smith said none of the officers were injured.
The officers activated their body-worn cameras during the incident. That footage will now be reviewed as part of the investigation.
Police recovered the suspect’s weapon.
The case will now be independently reviewed as well.
The officers have been placed on administrative leave as part of department policy.
