RED SOX: Travis Shaw, who made his big league debut last May, will be the team's starting third baseman. The 25-year-old earned the spot over veteran Pablo Sandoval. “If it's the right decision to help the team win, I'm going to be happy. I'm going to be ready for the bench. I'll get ready for everything in the season and do my job,” said Sandoval, who hit .245 last season with a .292 on-base percentage, 10 homers and 47 RBIs.
CARDINALS: Signed during spring training to help the Cardinals cover shortstop after an injury to All-Star Jhonny Peralta, Ruben Tejada will now open the season on the disabled list with a quadriceps strain. To take Tejada's spot on the Opening Day roster, the Cardinals notified Jeremy Hazelbaker that he had made the team.
YANKEES: Reliever Andrew Miller plans to pitch with a broken wrist in his glove hand. Miller suffered a chip fracture of his right wrist Wednesday when hit by a line drive. “I think I can work around it,” Miller said. Miller was the Yankees closer last season and is expected to fill that role while Aroldis Chapman serves a 30-game suspension.
ROYALS: Reliever Tim Collins will need Tommy John surgery for the second time. The team said Collins tore his elbow tendon while rehabilitating from his initial injury. The 26-year-old left-hander hasn't pitched since Game 6 of the 2014 World Series.
PADRES: The Padres granted Casey Janssen'srequest and gave the veteran reliever his release. Janssen, 34, was in camp as a nonroster player. Janssen had a 3.00 ERA in six games this spring.
TIGERS: OF J.D. Martinez hit three HRs during his team's 10-6 win over the Yankees on Thursday. Martinez has seven HRs during the spring.
