Two Arizona political groups engaged in a fiery exchange via X regarding deportation efforts by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The spat began when Arizona State University’s College Republicans United chapter shared it would be setting up a campus display encouraging students to report illegal residents to ICE. Included was an image of a T-shirt with the chapter’s logo on one side and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security emblem on the other.
“At a rate of 7,000 deportations per day, it would take four years to remove just the 10 million who entered under Biden,” the group wrote. “So far, Trump’s administration is averaging only about 1,000 per day — far below what’s needed.”
Reacting to the post was the group Young Democrats of Arizona, which issued a statement last week calling on ASU President Michael Crow to intervene.
“It is despicable to see a student organization host (another) event fueled solely by hatred for immigrants on the main Arizona State University campus,” it wrote. “The Young Democrats of Arizona unequivocally condemn these actions. We believe schools are a place of learning. All students should be able to exist on campus without fear of deportations.”
CRU responded by reposting the statement along with a link to a form to send tips to ICE.
“Reporting crimes is not only a civic duty but also a fundamental for maintaining public safety and the rule of law,” it wrote. “Law agencies rely on the public to effectively address unlawful activities, and providing information through legal channels is an essential part of that process.”
Young Democrats issued a warning to ASU students.
“ASU students, please avoid the MU this morning,” it wrote. “Stay safe. Clearly, @ASU administration does not care to protect you against these blatantly racist attacks. Remember that when they reiterate their commitment to inclusion or ask you to donate to the alumni association.”
Also entering the dispute was the school’s College Republicans chapter, which condemned CRU’s actions and disavowed any association with the group.
