Jets running back Le’Veon Bell could miss a few weeks after injuring his left hamstring in the team’s season-opening loss to the Bills.

Coach Adam Gase says Monday he doesn’t want to put a timetable on the former All-Pro’s return, but says it could take some time because it’s a soft-tissue injury.

Bell was injured on an incomplete pass in the second quarter. He returned for the second half, with his left leg wrapped. But, Gase acknowledged after the game he was “mad at myself” for letting Bell back onto the field. Bell was removed from the game shortly into the third quarter.

Frank Gore and Josh Adams are the only other healthy Jets RBs.

All-Pro WR Michael Thomas, the reigning offensive player of the year, suffered a high-ankle injury in the Saints’ win over the Bucs but he believes he can play next Monday night against the Raiders, NFL Network reported. ... Former Pro Bowl LB Leighton Vander Esch broke his collarbone in the Cowboys’ loss to the Rams and will undergo surgery soon that likely will sideline him for 6-8 weeks, according to reports. ... RB Marlon Mack suffered a torn Achilles tendon during the Colts’ loss to the Jaguars, ending his season. Rookie RB Jonathan Taylor will take over as the Colts’ starter. ... The Browns waived K Austin Seibert after he missed his lone FG attempt and only extra-point try in the team’s loss to the Ravens. Cody Parkey was signed to the 53-man roster from the practice squad.

College football: LSU DL Neil Farrell is expected to opt back in for the season, according to reports. Farrell opted out of the season in August, citing family concerns regarding the coronavirus pandemic. ... Ohio State CB Shaun Wade announced that he will opt out of his senior season to prepare for the NFL draft. The Big Ten postponed the fall season due to the pandemic. Wade’s father, Randy, has been vocal among the group of parents trying to get the conference to reverse its decision to postpone the season.

Golf: Scottie Scheffler, a candidate for PGA Tour rookie of the year after tying for 4th in the PGA Championship last month, withdrew from this week’s U.S. Open on Sunday after a positive COVID-19 test. On Monday, Sam Horsfield of England also withdrew after a positive test.

NHL: The Flames removed the interim tag from Geoff Ward’s job and made him the club’s coach. Ward was promoted from associate coach Nov. 29 after Bill Peters resigned amid allegations of racism when he coached in the minor leagues. A .500 team at that time, the Flames went go 25-15-3 under Ward and qualified for the playoffs.

Tennis: Three-time Grand Slam champ and former world No. 1 Andy Murray of Scotland received a wild card into the French Open, which begins Sept. 27. Murray, 33, plagued by injuries over recent years, was given a wild card into the U.S. Open and won his first-round match.
