Though summer is coming to an end, Jenny’s Market in West Friendship will continue to offer seasonal produce into the fall.

Owned by Linda Heigh and nestled on East Ivory Road, Jenny’s Market is a Black-owned and family-run small business. Heigh named the market, which began as a fruit stand, for her daughter, Jenny. Heigh started the business with her uncle and used the proceeds to help put herself through college.

Now, more than two decades later, the market offers a variety of fruits and vegetables throughout the spring, summer and fall seasons.Opening for the season in early May, the market sells a range of produce including avocados, bananas, broccoli, cabbage, cucumbers, mangos, peaches, peppers, pineapples, squash and tomatoes in the spring and summer.

The market will have apples, brussels sprouts, collards, green beans, kale, mums, pomegranates, potatoes, pumpkins, spinach and squash throughout the fall. This year, it will close Oct. 27.

Heigh works alongside her children and grandchildren at the market and tries to extend the familial aspect of her business to her customers.

“We have a very [loyal] customer base,” she said. “We get along and we’re almost like family.”

Joshua Heigh, 24, one of Heigh’s sons, works with her at the market. He grew up spending summers working at the market with his family, assisting customers, cleaning up and running errands.

“My favorite part of the stand would definitely be the family element and working with my family all day, every day,” he said.

Jenny’s Market is at 3485 East Ivory Road in West Friendship and is open daily, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., through Oct. 27.
