An officer with the Montgomery County Police Department fatally shot a man thought to be wielding a knife Sunday evening, according to investigators from the Maryland Office of the Attorney General, which is investigating the shooting. A grill fork was recovered near the man’s body.

At about 7:45 p.m., Montgomery County officers responded to the 3400 block of Janet Road in Wheaton after receiving a 911 call for a report of an assault in progress. When they arrived, there was a man in a yard holding an object in his right hand, according to the attorney general’s office in a news release.

Police shouted at the man to “drop the knife,” but he did not comply and started to cross the street, the news release says. One officer fired his weapon and hit the man.

Although officers provided emergency medical aid and called for EMS, the man was pronounced dead on the scene.

No officers were injured.

Officers on scene were equipped with body-worn cameras, and that footage is generally released after 20 business days. There could be delays if investigators need more time to complete witness interviews or if there are technical issues.
