The drivers killed in the five-car crash in Baltimore County near the Pennsylvania border Wednesday have been identified by Maryland State Police.
The driver of the pickup truck that lost control near Parkton has been identified Thursday as 53-year-old Kevin Johnson, of Ruther Glen, Virginia. A LinkedIn profile matching his name and location says he was a machine operator for a logging company.
The truck was hauling a trailer when Johnson lost control and hit a mobile crane, killing its driver, 61-year-old James Hutson, of Ephrata, Pennsylvania.
During the crash, Johnson’s vehicle crossed into the northbound lanes from the southbound direction he was driving in and struck two other cars in addition to the crane.
The trailer hit yet another vehicle.
The collision between the crane and pickup truck caused a massive fire.
Four people injured in the crash were transported to a York, Pennsylvania, hospital for treatment, where their conditions remain unknown.
The crash closed both lanes and shoulders of I-83 north at the York Road exit at approximately 2:15 p.m. Wednesday.
The roads reopened early Thursday morning.
A state police spokesperson confirmed that a hazmat team was dispatched to the scene of the crash but said it was there mostly as a precaution in case of fuel spills. No charges have been filed.
