Nintendo has delayed preorders in Canada for the Switch 2.
A spokesperson for the company said in a statement that the delay is for the purpose of aligning the timing with preorders in the U.S.
“Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in Canada will not start on April 9, 2025 in order to align with the timing of pre-orders to be determined in the U.S. Nintendo will provide updated information at a later date,” the spokesperson said.
Last week, the company announced that U.S. pre-orders wouldn’t start until April 9 so it could assess the potential impact of tariffs and “evolving market conditions.” President Donald Trump imposed a 10% tariff on all countries on Friday, as well as additional tariffs on certain nations.
The stock market has declined since the president’s announcement of the tariffs, with the S&P 500 dropping more than 600 points from last Wednesday to Monday.
The White House argues that access to the American market “is a privilege, not a right,” and Trump has said Americans will be better off as a result of the tariffs. He posted on social media platform Truth Social on Sunday that “some day people will realize that Tariffs, for the United States of America, are a very beautiful thing!”
Some economic experts disagree with his assessment. The Tax Foundation, a think tank for tax policy, published a report Friday in which it estimated the universal tariffs will shrink U.S. GDP by 0.4%. When previous tariffs are factored into the equation, the think tank says, U.S. GDP will reduce by 0.7%.
