Here are The Baltimore Sun’s All-Metro girls soccer teams for the 2024 season:

Player of the Year

Abby Cover, Severna Park, senior, midfielder:A four-year varsity player at holding midfield, Cover entered her senior year craving the challenges that came with it, most notably leading the younger players and taking on more responsibility. She thrived, leading the No. 1 Falcons (18-1) to their second straight Class 3A state title.

Consistently disrupting the opponents’ attacks, getting the ball forward and making teammates around her successful, Cover was the area’s finest two-way player. She played a significant role in the Falcons’ 13 shutouts — the last coming in a 4-0 win over Towson in the state championship game — and contributed timely offense with six goals and six assists.

“This year, she put it all together for us,” Severna Park coach Rick Stimpson said. “She’s great at breaking pressure, she’s always available and is never rushed on the ball. And then when she gets into the final third, she’s a threat to score from anywhere.

“The biggest thing for us, especially in the middle of the field, she just brought everybody into the game and made all those players around her that much better.”

The UNC-Greensboro commit had plenty of season highlights, with the best coming in the big games. She pushed up to score an overtime goal in a 1-0 win against Anne Arundel County rival Chesapeake in the state semifinals and then had a fine assist on the opening goal against Towson in the title game.

For Cover, the season was much more than bringing home another state crown.

“It’s the journey, truly,” she said. “Just every practice, hanging with the coaches and seeing the girls every single day. It’s not just winning and, yeah, I liked winning states again — it’s great. But every single practice was so much fun with all the great relationships we made.”

Coach of the Year

Colin Devlin, Maryvale Prep:Going into the season with a senior-laden team smarting from a disappointing overtime loss in last year’s quarterfinals, Devlin knew he had a tight and highly motivated group. He considered the season’s task: Challenge his Lions, trust them and keep them motivated.

In his 16th season as coach, Devlin kept practices short as long as they stayed crisp. He set up a demanding nonconference schedule — a highlight coming when the Lions took No. 1 and nationally ranked McDonogh into overtime before falling, 3-2, on Sept. 20. And when the playoffs came, they were poised and ready with a 1-0 win over Severn to bring home the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference title.

The No. 14 Lions (11-3-1) went 7-1 in league play and won the program’s third conference crown.

“My whole career, it’s always next game, next game — who’s next and let’s get ready for them,” said Devlin, who started with the program as an assistant coach in 2004 and has a 148-130-20 career mark. “Keep the girls motivated, healthy and happy. The excitement just generated from the get-go, and it was super special.”

First team

McKenzie Brown, McDonogh, senior, forward: Bringing tough-to-match pace, persistence and a scorer’s touch, Brown took on the role of go-to player for the No. 4 Eagles (13-4) and consistently stood out. She finished the season with 12 goals and seven assists.

Hannah DeVincent, Liberty, senior, forward: Producing in the run of play and on free kicks, DeVincent posted staggering numbers — 19 goals and 29 assists — in leading the No. 9 Lions (16-1-2) to the Class 1A state title. Strong on the ball and equally precise whether finishing or setting up teammates, she closed her career with assists on all three of the Lions’ goals in their 3-0 state title win over Mardela.

Sydney Rhodes, Howard, senior, forward: Fast to the ball and strong with it, Rhodes was a consistent scoring threat who also could win the end line to send crosses to teammates. In leading the No. 10 Lions (14-2) to the program’s first Howard County title and a trip to the region title game, she finished with 15 goals and five assists this season.

Riley Wills, Spalding, senior, forward: Front and center in the No. 3 Cavaliers’ IAAM A Conference championship run, Wills scored twice in the 3-2 semifinal win over McDonogh, including the winner in double overtime. She also added the insurance goal in the 2-0 title win over Mercy. In her fourth varsity season, the Flagler commit had eight goals and four assists this season.

Bella Coccio, Century, senior, midfielder: A four-year starter, Coccio brought outstanding technical skills and game sense sharing time at the holding and attacking midfield positions. Set to play at Rochester Institute of Technology, Coccio had eight goals and three assists in leading the No. 11 Knights (12-3-1) to the Carroll County title.

Mackenzie Hobik, Mercy, senior, midfielder: A steadying influence and dynamic performer in her attacking midfielder role, Hobik brought gifted playmaking skills and a heavy and precise shot in leading the No. 6 Magic (11-5) to the IAAM A Conference title game. Providing leadership on a roster filled with underclassmen, the VMI commit finished the season with eight goals and 12 assists.

Ava Skaggs, Mt. Hebron, senior, midfielder:A repeat-first-team selection, the Eastern Michigan commit consistently played with a high level of skill and tenacity to set the tone in leading the No. 12 Vikings to their 8-2-4 season. Seeing time at attacking midfielder and up front when needed, she finished with six goals and six assists for a team-high 18 points.

Anna Buckley, Maryvale Prep, senior, defender:A four-year starter at outside back, Buckley played every minute of every game throughout her career, leading the Lions (11-3-1) to their second IAAM B Conference title this season. Playing fast, disciplined with constant purpose, she contributed to eight shutouts — capped by a 1-0 win over Severn in the title game — and added two goals and one assist.

Olivia Nardone, Spalding, senior, defender: Fittingly, Nardone scored the game-winning goal in the Cavaliers’ 2-0 win over Mercy for the IAAM A Conference championship. A four-year varsity player, two-year captain and repeat All-Metro pick at center back, Nardone worked hard to get back on the field after an early injury to provide strong defending, four goals and six assists on offense and, most importantly, unwavering confidence.

Koto Davis, Towson, senior, defender:A highly-skilled midfielder in past seasons, Davis played left back this season and the move paid big dividends as the No. 7 Generals (15-2) claimed the Baltimore County crown and reached the Class 3A title game. While playing sensational defense, Davis pushed up relentlessly and took the Generals’ free kicks to produce 10 goals and nine assists.

Hanna Phillips, Notre Dame Prep, senior, defender:A repeat first-team selection at center back, Phillips brought exceptional skills and fierce competitiveness in leading the No. 6 Blazers (8-2-1) to seven shutouts and only six goals allowed this season. The Florida Gulf Coast commit, a four-year starter and two-year captain, also scored two goals this season.

Lexi Terry, McDonogh, senior, defender: A four-year varsity player and captain, the center back brought smooth and consistent play as the glue to a back line that allowed four goals in the Eagles’ 6-0 conference record in the regular season. Handling most of the team’s free kicks, the UMass commit contributed five goals and eight assists.

Lydia Itzoe, Notre Dame Prep, junior, goalkeeper:In her third season as a starter, Itzoe supremely controlled the penalty area with quality positioning and shot-stopping ability in addition to poised distribution with the ball at her feet. In leading the Blazers to the IAAM A Conference semifinals, the captain yielded six goals in league play with 48 saves and six shutouts.
