In the wake of Barstool Sports’ founder Dave Portnoy’s tour of the Baltimore area’s most prized pizzas, some restaurants have been overwhelmed by orders and even paused online ordering in response.
The first review Portnoy posted in the area, of Federal Hill’s TinyBrickOven, stirred up support for the pizzeria, which was then on the verge of closure. Portnoy rated the pie a 7.9, praised owner Will Fagg’s positive attitude and then wrote out a check for $60,000 to keep the shop open and support its pursuit of a liquor license.
Since then, TBO’s Pay-It-Forward Program, which donates pizzas to the hungry, has raised over $127,000.
“We are Not closing today (we are temporarily closed for the holiday) ! The very generous barstool review basically broke the internet (our email server instantly crashed due to overwhelming email volumes) We received record numbers of sales and donations yesterday and today,” Fagg wrote in a Christmas update to the GoFundMe page.
“We have plenty of pizzas to give out to those in need but If I could make one more Christmas wish, it would be to be able to buy our own commercial space and maybe open another location, so I am converting this GoFundMe to that purpose now,” he wrote.
As of Monday afternoon, TinyBrickOven’s online and phone ordering had been paused, requiring would-be diners to come in person, according to its website. And its pause-worthy success was shared by another local pizza parlor.
“All of our locations have been incredibly busy after the video was published, we had to pause online orders for a longer period of time than usual. Matter of fact our online order website was crushed the next day, because of the volume, ” Angeli’s Pizzeria, whose owner captivated Portnoy at its Little Italy location before he rated the pizza a 7.3, told The Baltimore Sun.
None of the other shops Portnoy visited appeared to have ordering pauses on Monday, though some were closed as part of their regular hours, including TinyBrickOven. The other pizzerias Portnoy reviewed did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
