Tampa, Fla. — The beating goes on.

The Orioles traveled to Steinbrenner Field on Friday hoping to find their way into the Grapefruit League win column, but the New York Yankees were not cooperative, and the Orioles' marathon winless streak reached 12 games.

The Yankees jumped out to an early lead, just as they had Thursday at Ed Smith Stadium, but there would be no late-inning comeback like the one that salvaged a tie in that game. This time, the Orioles were behind by seven runs after three innings, and the Yankees held on for a 7-1 victory.

Yankees ace Masahiro Tanaka pitched three strong innings and gave up just an infield hit to Orioles left fielder Hyun Soo Kim and struck out three batters.

Orioles starter Mike Wright lasted 22/3 innings but allowed five runs on five hits to take the loss in an up-and-down performance that also featured six strikeouts. He could take some solace in the fact that the first two Yankees runs came on a jam-shot single by Brian McCann that barely got over the infield and by a broken-bat single by Didi Gregorius.

The Orioles (0-10-2) are back in Sarasota today to face the Minnesota Twins. Ubaldo Jimenez will make his third start of the spring for the Orioles, and veteran right-hander Phil Hughes will take the mound for the Twins.

Hysterical perspective: For those wondering how far back you have to go to find a streak of futility longer than the one the Orioles have built at the start of this exhibition season, the answer is not all that far. According to STATS, the Houston Astros went 0-16-3 at the start of the Grapefruit League season in 2009.

The Washington Nationals opened the 2012 exhibition season with an 0-10-1 record in their first 11 games, but the Orioles surpassed that Friday.

Kim's modest hit streak: Kim has an infield hit in each of the past two games after going hitless in his first 23 at-bats of the spring, but he almost didn't get credit for Friday's. The play was originally ruled an error after Yankees second baseman Starlin Castro charged the ball and allowed it to bounce past him and into center field. It was later changed to a hit, and Kim finished the day 1-for-3 and batting .074.

Some pitching highlights: Despite the lopsided score, there were several solid pitching performances out of the Orioles bullpen, starting with 21/3 innings of one-hit relief by Cuban pitcher Odrisamer Despaigne. Dale Thayer followed him to the mound and pitched a hitless sixth, and Mychal Givens finished up with two scoreless innings in which he gave up two hits and struck out two.
