CUBS: Theo Epstein beat out multiple heads of state, tech CEOs and even Pope Francis to be named world’s greatest leader by Fortune magazine. As president of baseball operations, he directed a franchise that won its first World Series since 1908. But Epstein was nonplussed: “The whole thing is patently ridiculous. It’s baseball, a pastime involving a lot of chance. If (Ben) Zobrist’s ball (to drive in the go-ahead run in Game 7 of the World Series) is three inches farther off the line, I’m on the hot seat for a failed five-year plan.” ... LHP Brett Anderson won the fifth spot in the rotation. ... RHP Jake Arrieta hit a 465-foot home run but gave up three runs on eight hits in five innings of a 5-5 tie with the Diamondbacks.
TIGERS:1B Miguel Cabrera, who hurt his back at the WBC, said he was unsure whether he would be ready for opening day. ... Justin Verlander allowed one run on two hits in six innings of a 2-1 loss to the Braves.
ANGELS: IF Luis Valbuena strained his right hamstring and is out four to six weeks. ... Yonder Alonso homered twice in a 15-5 win over the Brewers. Junior Guerra gave up 12 runs (seven earned) on 10 hits in 32/3 innings.
MARINERS: In a surprise, 1B Daniel Vogelbach was optioned to Triple A, meaning Danny Valencia will start at the position. Vogelbach, a left-handed hitter, and Valencia, who bats right-handed, had been expected to split time. But Vogelbach has struggled this spring, hitting just .228.
EXTRA INNINGS: Dustin Pedroia went 3-for-3 and Pablo Sandoval drove in three runs in the Red Sox’s 10-7 victory over the Pirates. ... White Sox LHP Jose Quintana retired the first 17 batters and pitched seven shutout innings in a 4-2 victory over the Reds. ... Adam Wainwright surrendered three runs (one earned) on five hits in four innings in the Cardinals’ 5-3 win over the Marlins. His spring ERA is 8.59.
