“Ferdinand”

Family/animated, PG. Based on the 1936 book by Munro Leaf, this is the tale of a gentle bull mistaken for a frightening beast. After being separated from his family, he struggles to return home. Carlos Saldanha (“Ice Age”) directs, with the voices of John Cena, Kate McKinnon and David Tennant.

“Star Wars: The Last Jedi”

Sci-fi/drama, PG-13. In the latest installment of the franchise, Rey (Daisy Ridley) seeks training from Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), while Finn (John Boyega) recovers from his injuries and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) must come to terms with who he really is. Carrie Fisher stars in her final film. Also, there are Porgs.

“The Greatest Showman”

Biography/musical, PG. Hugh Jackman stars as P.T. Barnum in the story of how one of the world’s biggest circuses came to be. Zac Efron, Rebecca Ferguson and Zendaya also star.

“Downsizing”

Sci-fi/comedy, R. A man aspires to a better life — and one that’s more environmentally sound — when he opts for a procedure to shrink his entire building. Matt Damon, Kristen Wiig and Hong Chau star.

“Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle”

Family/comedy, PG-13. An old video game played by four teens transports them into a jungle as their avatars. Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan and Jack Black star. Jake Kasdan (“Walk Hard”) directs.

“Pitch Perfect 3”

Musical comedy, PG-13. The a cappella Bellas reunite for one last competition and go up against groups who sing and use instruments. Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson star along with Elizabeth Banks, Anna Camp, Ruby Rose, Hailee Steinfeld.

“The Post”

Drama, PG-13. Steven Spielberg directs Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks in the dramatization of The Washington Post’s effort to publish and bring the public’s attention to the Pentagon Papers in 1971. Bob Odenkirk, Sarah Paulson, Tracy Letts and Carrie Coon also star.

“All the Money in the World”

Drama, R. Ridley Scott directs Michelle Williams, Mark Wahlberg and Christopher Plummer in the ’70s kidnapping of 16-year-old John Paul Getty III and his mother’s commitment to bring him home.

“Molly’s Game”

Drama, R. An Olympic skier leaves the sport, starts hosting elite poker games and is scrutinized by the FBI. Jessica Chastain and Idris Elba star, and Aaron Sorkin directs and co-wrote the script based on real-life events.

“Phantom Thread”

Drama, R. Paul Thomas Anderson directs Daniel Day-Lewis in his final film as a famous dressmaker inspired by the woman who would become his muse.
