Late dunk beats Coppin State, 85-84
Last-minute 3-pointer sinks Morgan State
Damni Applewhite scored 21 points and threw down a dunk with two seconds left and South Carolina State beat Coppin State, 85-84, on Monday night.
Dejaun Clayton made one of two foul shots and the Eagles led 84-81 with 27 seconds to left. Taqwain Drummond immediately fouled Applewhite, who went to the foul line and made a pair. Lavar Harewood came up with a steal on the Bulldogs’ next possession to set up Applewhite’s game-winner.
Janai Raynor-Powell had 16 points and eight assists for South Carolina State (6-20, 4-6 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference). Harewood added 16 points.
Clayton scored a career-high 30 points and had six assists for the Eagles (5-21, 5-6). Kent Auslander added 14 points.
Jaquan Dotson had 18 points for Savannah State (9-15, 6-4 MEAC), which won its fourth straight game.
Stanley Davis had 21 points and seven rebounds for Morgan State (8-16, 3-8), which has lost four in a row. Kyson Rawls added 19 points. Antonio Gillespie had 10 points.
Sherwyn Devonish-Prince Jr., the Bears’ second leading scorer entering the contest at 11 points per game, shot only 14 percent for the game (2-for-14).
Ibrahim Sylla had 14 points and nine rebounds for N.C. A&T (13-11, 8-2 MEAC), which earned its sixth straight home victory. Aaren Edmead added 13 points. Kameron Langley had nine assists for the hosts.
Ryan Andino had 11 points for the Hawks (4-23, 2-10).
Women
With the Mount playing without top scorer Juliette Lawless, Harrison went 11-of-25 from the field and 4-for-12 on 3-pointers for her second 30-plus-point game of the season. She had 10 rebounds.
LIU Brooklyn freshman Brandy Thomas, who is the second-leading rookie scorer in the league behind Harrison, had a career-high 36 points and 19 rebounds, shooting 16-for-24 from the field and 2-for-2 on 3-pointers.
